PAT Testing

At Ventro, we provide comprehensive PAT Testing services designed to identify potential hazards and prevent electrical faults. Our experienced technicians meticulously inspect each appliance, conducting thorough tests to verify that they are safe for use and meet all necessary standards.

What is PAT Testing?

PAT Testing (Portable Appliance Testing) refers to the process of inspecting and assessing electrical appliances and equipment to ensure they are safe to use. A qualified electrician will begin by visually examining the appliance for any visible damage or signs of wear, such as a frayed cord or a cracked plug. Following the visual inspection, the electrician will conduct tests to detect any electrical faults.

After completing the tests, a label will be attached to the appliance, indicating either that it has failed to meet safety standards and should not be used, or that it has passed and the date of testing. Additionally, a report will be provided, documenting each tested appliance and its pass or fail status.

Whilst PAT Testing is not legally required, it’s highly recommended for all businesses to ensure electrical risks (such as fire) are reduced and is one of the easiest way for businesses to meet their obligation to providing their workforce with safe equipment.

PAT Testing FAQs
Does my business need to have its portable electrical appliances tested?

The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require that any electrical equipment that has the potential to cause injury is maintained in a safe condition. However, the Regulations do not specify what needs to be done, by whom or how frequently.

Can anybody in my business complete a PAT Test?

The individual carrying out the testing must be competent to do so. In many low-risk environments, a sensible (competent) staff member can perform visual inspections if they have sufficient knowledge and training. However, when conducting combined inspection and testing, a higher level of expertise is required, and the person must have the correct equipment, the ability to use this equipment and the knowledge and ability to interpret the results.

How frequently do I need to test my appliances?

The frequency of inspection and testing varies depending on the type of equipment and the environment in which it is used. For instance, a power tool on a construction site should be inspected more often than a charger for a work tablet.

Does my company need to test brand new equipment?

New equipment should be provided in a safe condition and should not require a formal portable appliance inspection or test. However, a simple visual check is recommended to ensure the item is not damaged.
